UNDERSTANDING HEADACHES
What Causes Headaches?
Headaches can have many different causes and triggers. Some are primary headache disorders, such as migraine or tension-type headache, while others may be associated with another condition or musculoskeletal problem.
Potential factors can include migraine, muscle tension, neck-related musculoskeletal problems, stress, sleep disruption, dehydration, certain foods or environmental triggers, medication-related factors, illness and injury.
Chiropractic evaluation focuses on identifying relevant musculoskeletal factors rather than assuming every headache has the same cause.

HEADACHE PATTERNS
Common Types of Headaches
Tension-Type Headaches
Often involve pressure or tightness around the head and may occur with scalp, neck or shoulder tenderness.
Migraine
A neurological disorder that can involve recurring headache, nausea, light or sound sensitivity and other symptoms.
Cervicogenic Headaches
Headache pain associated with a problem originating from structures in the neck.
Headaches With Neck Pain
Some headache patterns occur alongside neck stiffness, muscle tension or reduced neck movement.
Post-Injury Headaches
Headaches can occur after whiplash or other trauma and may require evaluation to determine the appropriate next step.
TENSION-TYPE HEADACHES
What Is a Tension Headache?
Tension-type headaches commonly involve pressure or tightness around the head and may occur with tenderness around the scalp, neck or shoulders.
Muscle tension, stress, prolonged postures, workstation habits and neck or shoulder discomfort may be associated with symptoms in some people. These headaches should not automatically be attributed to spinal alignment.
CERVICOGENIC HEADACHES
What Is a Cervicogenic Headache?
A cervicogenic headache is headache pain associated with a problem originating from structures in the neck.
Possible features include pain beginning around the neck or back of the head, pain traveling toward the front or side of the head, reduced neck movement, symptoms aggravated by certain neck positions and associated neck discomfort.
Other headache conditions can produce similar symptoms, so appropriate evaluation is important. Learn more about neck pain care in San Antonio.
MIGRAINE SYMPTOMS
What Is a Migraine?
Migraine is a neurological disorder that can cause recurring attacks involving headache and other symptoms.
Symptoms may include throbbing or pulsating headache, nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, visual symptoms or aura in some people, and symptoms worsened by normal activity. Migraine symptoms and triggers vary significantly.
Migraine is not simply a severe headache and should not be described as being caused by spinal misalignment.
NECK & HEADACHE CONNECTION
Can Neck Problems Contribute to Headaches?
Yes. Some headache patterns can be associated with musculoskeletal problems involving the neck.
Neck muscles, joints, posture and movement can sometimes contribute to headache symptoms, particularly in cervicogenic headache or headaches associated with neck discomfort. However, not every headache originates from the neck, and migraine is not simply a neck problem.
See our neck pain treatment information.
POST-INJURY HEADACHES
Headaches After Whiplash or a Car Accident
Headaches can occur following whiplash or other injuries. Associated symptoms may include neck pain, stiffness, reduced neck movement, upper-back discomfort and dizziness.
Headache following trauma can also be associated with concussion or other injuries, so it should not automatically be classified as a chiropractic problem.

CONSERVATIVE CARE
Can a Chiropractor Help With Headaches?
For some patients whose headaches are associated with neck or musculoskeletal factors, chiropractic care may help improve mobility, reduce mechanical stress and support more comfortable movement.
A chiropractor can evaluate neck mobility, joint movement, posture, muscle tension, movement patterns and the history of symptoms. For appropriate patients, care may address relevant musculoskeletal factors.
Chiropractic care is not appropriate for every headache. Some headache patterns require medical evaluation or co-management. Learn more about chiropractic care at Moore Chiropractic.
YOUR EVALUATION
How We Evaluate Headache and Neck Symptoms
Health & Headache History
We discuss when headaches began, frequency, location, duration, triggers, associated symptoms, previous injuries, neck symptoms and previous diagnoses.
Musculoskeletal Evaluation
We evaluate posture, neck mobility, relevant joint movement, muscle tenderness and movement patterns.
Neurological Screening
Relevant neurological findings may be assessed when clinically appropriate.
Personalized Recommendations
We determine whether conservative chiropractic care is appropriate or whether medical evaluation, imaging, referral or co-management may be needed.
COMMON TRIGGERS
What Can Trigger Headaches or Migraines?
Triggers vary significantly between people. Possible triggers may include stress, sleep changes, dehydration, skipped meals, certain foods, alcohol, caffeine changes, bright lights, strong smells, hormonal changes, physical strain, prolonged posture and weather changes.
A trigger does not necessarily represent the underlying cause of a headache disorder, and chiropractic care should not be presented as a treatment for every trigger.
HEADACHE FREQUENCY
Occasional vs. Frequent Headaches
Occasional headaches may occur for many reasons. Recurring or increasingly frequent headaches deserve appropriate evaluation, particularly when the headache pattern changes, symptoms become more severe, headaches interfere with daily activities or new neurological symptoms develop.
Frequency alone does not identify the cause.

For some patients whose headaches are associated with neck or musculoskeletal factors, chiropractic care may help improve mobility, reduce mechanical stress and support more comfortable movement.
Can chiropractic care help migraines?
Some people with migraine also experience neck pain or musculoskeletal symptoms that may benefit from conservative care, but migraine is a neurological disorder and chiropractic care should not be presented as a cure.
What causes headaches?
Headaches can have many causes and triggers, including primary headache disorders, muscle tension, neck-related musculoskeletal problems, stress, sleep disruption, dehydration, illness and injury.
What is a tension headache?
A tension-type headache commonly involves pressure or tightness around the head and may occur with tenderness around the scalp, neck or shoulders.
What is a cervicogenic headache?
A cervicogenic headache is headache pain associated with a problem originating from structures in the neck.
What is a migraine?
Migraine is a neurological disorder that can cause recurring attacks involving headache and other symptoms such as nausea and sensitivity to light or sound.
Are migraines just severe headaches?
No. Migraine is a neurological disorder and can involve symptoms beyond head pain, including nausea, light or sound sensitivity and, for some people, aura.
Can neck pain cause headaches?
Yes. Some headache patterns can be associated with musculoskeletal problems involving the neck, although not every headache originates from the neck.
Can poor posture contribute to headaches?
Prolonged postures may contribute to neck and muscle tension in some people, which can be associated with certain headache patterns. Posture is only one possible factor.
Can muscle tension cause headaches?
Muscle tension around the neck, shoulders and scalp can be associated with tension-type headaches, but recurring headaches can have many possible causes.
Can whiplash cause headaches?
Yes. Headaches can occur following whiplash, although post-accident headaches can have several possible causes and some require medical evaluation.
Can a car accident cause headaches?
Yes. Headaches may occur after a car accident from whiplash, concussion or other causes. New or significant headaches after trauma should be appropriately evaluated.
Why do I keep getting headaches?
Recurring headaches can have many possible causes and triggers. A changing, increasingly frequent or disruptive headache pattern deserves appropriate clinical evaluation.
When should I worry about a headache?
Seek prompt medical evaluation for a sudden extremely severe headache, a major change in your usual pattern, headache after significant trauma, or headache accompanied by serious neurological symptoms.
What headache symptoms require emergency care?
Sudden severe headache with weakness, numbness, facial drooping, confusion, difficulty speaking, seizure, loss of coordination or loss of consciousness requires emergency medical attention.
Can headaches cause nausea?
Yes. Nausea can accompany some headache disorders, especially migraine.
Why am I sensitive to light during a migraine?
Sensitivity to light, called photophobia, is a common migraine symptom and can occur along with headache, nausea and sensitivity to sound.
Do I need imaging for recurring headaches?
Not everyone with recurring headaches needs imaging. The need for imaging depends on the history, examination, headache pattern and presence of warning signs.
Should I see a chiropractor or doctor for headaches?
That depends on the headache pattern and symptoms. Headaches associated with neck or musculoskeletal factors may be appropriate for chiropractic evaluation, while new, severe, unusual or neurological symptoms may require medical evaluation.
